A few days ago when I was looking through Yahoo Answer, accidently I saw some questions about the conversion between flash SWF and other video/picture formats. The frequently-asked questions are: how to convert SWF to AVI? How to convert SWF to MOV? And how to convert SWF to animated GIF?

Next, I'll extract some pictures to illustrate how I solve the above questions:

Question 1: Where and how can I download flash SWFs?

Usually, you should focus on some online game websites cause most of the little games there are made in SWF format. Also, most advertisements and banners on the websites are made in SWF format too. If you are still not sure where to find them, just type the URL of the website that you think there may be flashes, and the program will automatically detect and download(if any).

Look at Figure 1, i just rendomly type youtube.com and actually I'm not sure whether it has flash there or not, click "Go" to perform search, if there is, the SWF URL will be listed, if there is not, just change another URL to try.

Question 2: How to convert SWF to AVI?

I have to say this is one of the basic SWF to video converions and is extremely useful for those who want to play SWF files on PC players and with excellent picture and sound quality. Please see Figure 2.

PS: if you are a professional video editor, you can choose "Video with alpha" option to convert SWF to AVI with alpha channel.

Question 3: How to convert SWF to MOV?

Microsoft IE9 will Support VP8 Video Technology and May Replace Flash

May 20th, 2010, manager of IE department Dean Hachamovitch said Microsoft IE9 browser will support VP8 video CODEC technology, the purpose of which is to improve IE9's openness and compatibility.

WebM Project

Google has announced the debut of WebM project on Wednesday's I/O developers technology conference. WebM is an open, royalty-free network media file format, and is supported by the commercial software giants such as Mozilla(the developer of Firefox browser), Opera(the developer of Norway browser), AMD, Nvidia , Oracle and so on.

WebM adopts VP8 codec technology, which is Matroska media technology based on the network video technology developer On2.. Early this February, Google has taken over On2 with $1.06 million dollars. On2 is well-known for video compression technology, and this technology has been widely applied in all kinds of desktop software and mobile applications. On2 customers include Adobe, Skype, Nokia, Infineon, Sun, SONY, American network television servicer Brightcove etc.

Microsoft Response

Regarding Google WebM, Hachamovitch said on Wednesday's night in blog: "IE9 supports not only HTML5, but also H.264 video and VP8 video. However, the premise is the users must have the VP8 codec pack installed in Windows." He stressed that there are still some specific technical problems need to be solved before IE9's perfect support to VP8.

Hachamovitch said: "I want to make it clear that we hope to maintain IE's security and stability, but at the same, improve its openness and compatibility. We promise to the customers that IE9 shall support all the frequently-used media formats. Meanwhile, the intellectual property rights of Windows clients, developers, and all internet users, will be protected.

Standard Competition

Fully support to networl video is one of the new functions of HTML5 internet browsing standard. But for the network video standard, Ogg Theora and H.264 are deadlocked. Microsoft, as one of the important contributors to H.264 standard, decides to continually support it in Windows operating system and IE9 browsers. Apple also stands by H.264 and said the H.264 video technology will become the alternative products of Adobe Flash.

However, Mozilla and Opera have different voices. They disapprove H.264 format. In addition, the insiders who establish the the technical specification of HTML5 also said, network video standard should not only choose specific codec.

Insiders said, WebM project may help reduce the conflict between Ogg Theora and H.264. But if WebM can not get the support from Microsoft and Apple, it is very hard to be the actual network video standard. Apple hasn't comment on Google's release of WebM project yet.

Mozilla preachers Chris Blizzard wrote in blog on Wednesday: "VP8 is superior to Ogg Theora speaking of codec quality, and it can compete with H.264 speaking of picture quality. We will support WebM in Firefox, and today we released the beta Firefox 4.0, with the early support to WebM."

Opera also launched a beta browser which supports WebM format. Opera CTO Hakon Wium Lie said: "HTML, CSS and JavaScript have never had patent, Internet should always be open.

Although the video function of HTML5 standard may be a significant threat to Adobe Flash, Google and Adobe are already in the alliance and Google has decided to integrate Flash to its Chrome browser. Because of this, Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch said on Wednesday that Flash player will be integrated with VP8 function and the new product is set to be released within one year.

In this letter, Adobe declared: "the essence of the problem lies in: who is the real controllor of Internet? We think the answer is the Internet users, rather than any of the powerful company."

It is reported recently that Apple is developing the Flash-alternative project Gianduia, which was revealed in WWDC(Worldwide Developers Conference) last year.. Apple has said it will support HTML5, JavaScript and CSS, but not Flash.

The insiders think the Adobe open letter is a strong evidence that the divergence between Adobe and Apple is getting worse. Two weeks ago, the CEO of Apple just issued a 29-paragraph-long article to accuse Adobe Flash for "major technology defect". It is said that Adobe has officially sued to America Anti-Monopoly Government Department and it may investigate this case accordingly. This means the contradiction between the two is intensified thoroughly.

IV. Let's Do It!

Step 1: Make sure your webcam or DV recorder is attached to computer and working.

Step 2: Install FMS in your server and launch it afterwards. Usually it operates at background rather than at desktop, but you can easily check its working status from "Control Panel" → "Administrative Tools" → "Services".

Note: We will have an upcoming article soon introduces the solution of how to implement live streaming video playback in case your server is not accessible from local.

Step 3: Install FMLE in your computer and have a glance at the launch interface below.

Input area on the left, where it receives datas from camera and you can customize video and audio settings. Output area on the right where you can stream those datas to FMS and set other output-relative parameters.

Step 4: Click the green "Start" button to begin the video encoding and streaming process. The interface switches to show you the log accordingly like below. Start moving, acting, talking now in front of the webcam or DV recorder.

Step 5: Go back to FMLE interface, you will see the connection between FMLE and FMS is already established. Copy the FMS URL for the next step.

According to foreign media reports, Microsoft has urged its Windows XP users to upgrade the pre-loaded Adobe Flash Player 6.0 due to multiple security flaws on Tuesday.

Microsoft has released the #979267 safety proposal to urge its users either upgrade to the latest version of Flash Player or unload the old one due to several security flaws found in the early 6.0 version.

It's very rare that Microsoft would propose safety advice for third-party products. It does so because the Adobe Flash Player 6.0 is pre-loaded in Microsoft Windows XP and it's necessary to remind users that Adobe had stopped supporting Flash Player 6.0 since 2006. The latest version of Flash Player is 10.0.42.34.

Microsoft's purpose is very clear, they hope the users understand that the security flaw only occurs when the old version of flash player and old Windows are used at the same time, because the new Windows are without built-in Flash Player yet.

Microsoft said: "Adobe Flash Player 6.0 is provided at the same time with Windows XP, it contains several security flaws that may execute remote control code when browsing some specially-made webpages. Adobe has fixed those vulnerabilities in the latest Flash Player. Microsoft strongly recommends to upgrade to the latest Flash Player for those who is still using the old version of Windows XP and Adobe Flash Player 6.0.". Nevertheless, Microsoft indicates that there is no attack found so far related to those security flaws.

This security proposal is released for Adobe Flash Player 6.0 and together with other security vulnerabilities on Tuesday. Aug, 18th, 2009, Robert David Sanders "Bob" Novak, a syndicated columnist, televison personality, journalist and conservative political commentator passed away because of brain tumor in Washington DC, aged 78.

Highlights of Bob Novak's career:

1. Mr. Novak is a columnist writing one of the longest-running syndicated columns in the nation called Inside Report since 1963.

2. Mr. Novak travelled to China in 1978 and had an exclusive interview with Deng Tsiao-Peng, which opened the way for normalization of U.S.-China relations.

3. Mr. Novak has written for most of the nation's periodicals and is currently a contributing editor for Reader's Digest.

4. Mr. Novak was a commentator for the Cable News Network (CNN) for 25 years and he is also a commentator for FOX News.

5. Mr. Novak is the 2001 winner of the National Press Club's "Fourth Estate" award for lifetime achievement in journalism.

Just one day after, on Aug, 19th, 2009, another extraordinary American television news producer and executive, the creator of 60 Minutes, the only news program to ever been the nation's top-ranked television program for five times under Mr. Donald Shepard Hewitt's leadership, died, aged 86.

Highlights of Don Hewitt's career:

1. Mr. Hewitt directed the first network television newscast, with anchor Douglas Edwards, on May 3, 1948.

2. Mr. Hewitt produced the first televised presidential debate, in 1960 between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.

3. Mr. Hewitt first used cue cards for news anchors, a forerunner of the electronic TelePrompTer executive producer of the first half-hour network TV newscast, anchored by Walter Cronkite, starting in 1963.

4. Mr. Hewitt is the first to use superimpose type on the bottom of the television screen.

5. Mr. Hewitt created "60 Minutes" and was the show's executive producer for 36 years.

“Technotronics”from Big Brother 11

"Big Brother" is a popular real people show whose name is based on one sentence from George Orwell’s novel "1984": "Big Brother is watching you."

The basic rules of the show are: six young men and six young women live together in a specially designed house with beautiful garden, swimming pool and luxurious furnitures.However, they have to share only a bedroom, a living room and bathroom and under 24 hours video surveillance of their every single movement.

In 85 days, the players have to select two most unpopular people every Saturday. And the zealots who are watching the show in front of TV have to choose the least favorite between the two and eliminate that one via telephone calls.

"Big Brother" started the first episode on September 16th, 1999 in Netherlands, and there were as mang as 24 million audience. By October 30 that year, about 2/3 of the Dutch have seen the program.

In the latest season 11, houseguests had to find letters that were hidden amongst the mess and create words from the letters. The idea was that the man or woman, who spelt the longest word from the letters, would win Power of Veto.

When it came down to the spelling, a guy named Russell decided to go with the word ‘shotgun,’ while on the other hand, Jeff decided to spell the ‘technotronics.’ Well, not sure what that word actually means, but it was Russell that went on to win the Veto competition.

Bologna-Home to the Oldest University in Western World

Have been to Italy once and my favorite cities are Florence and Vennice.

Florence, one of the top 10 citites that has the best for people living in the world and the hometown of the most famous artist Leonardo da Vinci. This is the city full of culture, story and romance.

Venice, city of water. The whole city is floating on the water and the people there are living a tranquil life. This city is also full of bright colors: blue water, white bridges, black Gondola, gold venician mask, yellow house and green plants…… you can just watch time flying by drinking a cup of coffee along the river bank. However, the topic today is another city in northern Italy named Bologna. It’s the hometown to the oldest university in the Western world, "University of Bologna", founded in 1088, Bologna is one of the most developed cities in Italy. Bologna often ranks as one of the top cities, in terms of quality of life in Italy: it was ranked 5th in 2006, and 12th in 2007, out of 103 Italian cities.This is due to its strong industrial tradition, its wide range of highly-developed social services, and its physical location at the crossing-point of the most important highways and railways in the country.

Bologna is also renowned for its culinary tradition. It has given its name to the well-known Bolognese sauce, a meat based pasta sauce called in Italy.

Bologna is also known as “Basket City”, referring to Bologna’s obsession with basketball, which is somewhat unusual in football-dominated Italy.
